Citalopram works on the serotonergic receptors. Citalopram decreases the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) back into the synaptic cleft. SSRIs are known to reduce sexual drive. One theory hypothesizes a negative feedback action of the pituitary, hypothalamic and gonadal axis to be the primary contributing factor for the decline in sexual drive secondary to an SSRI.
“Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors seem the first-line pharmacological treatment for sexual addiction.”
Citalopram is FDA approved to treat the following conditions:
Major depressive disorder
Citalopram is not FDA approved to treat pornography addiction, internet sex addiction, sex addiction, problematic pornography use, it has shown some efficacy in treating said conditions or similar conditions. This has been documented in peer reviewed medical journal articles.
